Mr. Deepak Birua

Hon’ble Minister, Dept. of SC, ST, Minority & Backward Caste & Dept. of Transport
Deepak Birua, a fifty-five-year-old member of the JMM, has become the first Ho tribe MLA from the Kolhan division to be appointed as a minister in Jharkhand. Representing the Chaibasa (ST reserve) constituency since 2009, Birua is a popular third-term legislator. Active in politics from a young age, he initially contested unsuccessfully as an independent candidate from Chaibasa and Majhgaon in 1990 and Chaibasa in 1995. Despite further losses in 2000 and 2005, his persistence paid off with a victory in 2009. He retained his seat in subsequent elections in 2014 and 2019, defeating BJP's J B Tubid. His appointment has been welcomed by the Ho community, who previously felt underrepresented in the state cabinet.
